Europe forecast - November 30, 2024
Continental sun migrates east
Aegean remains unsettled
Issued: 0430hrs Saturday 30th November 2024
Duty forecaster: Dan Graves
Sunshine migrates to the east bringing a crisp, fine days to much of
central Europe. Showers to the south and north, heavy in the Aegean
Sea.
Saturday
A light southwesterly Atlantic breeze will maintain clouds over
Portugal and western Spain, with occasional showers in northern areas.
Eastern Spain and the islands to the east will enjoy plentiful sunshine
with scattered clouds. High pressure in eastern Europe will stretch
sunny conditions through eastern France, Germany, and the Alps all the
way to Poland, giving central Europe a fine, settled day. Though mostly
cloudy, there will be potential for sunny spells further east in
Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania. A blanket of clouds will rest further
north.
A low pressure system parks over southern Greece all day bringing
strong winds and plentiful rain in southeast Italy, Greece, and the
Aegean Sea, some quite heavy with thunder. Snow is likely to fall on
upland regions from northern Greece through south Romania and Bosnia
and Herzegovina. Gusty winds may blow along mountain tops as well and
through valleys. Northward, Hungary and Slovakia will experience more
settled conditions with sunbreaks.
The British Isles and Scandinavia will see higher winds from the
southwest and west, respectively, and mostly cloudy skies. Chance for
intermittent sun along North Sea coastlines. Coasts and mountains
facing the wind will see scattered showers throughout the day, with
more continuous showers in Norway. Southern Sweden and Denmark mostly
fine with occasional sunbreaks. A band of wintery showers and snow will
push across central Sweden and southern Finland, lingering longer in
Finland. Strong winds likely in the northern Baltics, particularly
along the coasts.
Sunday
Sunny and settled weather in central Europe gradually migrates east
throughout the day. Expect a chilled, mostly sunny day from eastern
France through Romania and Ukraine. In the afternoon, prolonged sun
will extend into Denmark, southern Sweden, and the Baltics. Pockets of
more extensive cloud may form, but otherwise only scattered clouds.
Clouds will be more extensive on the Iberian Peninsula. Moderate
showers will form along Portugal's coast and in the Bay of Biscay. The
islands between Spain and Italy will experience greater cloud coverage
than days past but remain dry. Expect dry and mostly sunny conditions
across Italy after some morning showers in the southeast move away.
Low pressure continues to dominate over the Aegean Sea, facilitating
heavy rains along the coasts with frequent showers and sun spells on
nearby the islands. Rains and winds will decrease north of Greece,
though clouds likely to remain over the Balkans. Afternoon sun will
push southward through Hungary, northern Croatia and Albania. The high
grounds of North Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Montenegro will continue to
see snow. River valleys in this region may flood after several days of
strong rains, though frozen precipitation at high altitudes may temper
such effects.
The British Isles will see a push of milder air as a band of
light-to-moderate rain arrives on a southwesterly wind. Upon passage,
winds gradually shift west, bringing the potential for sunny skies and
showers. The Norwegian coast will see prolonged rain along the coast,
with cloudy and breezy conditions across inland Scandinavia.
