• MyGUI Space in file name

From Owen@21:3/157 to All on Monday, January 10, 2022 08:57:48
Oh my. I do hope that this has not been a big problem. if so i apologize to all. I wrote the program and uploaded the file for Avon to take a look at, as such i placed the space in the file name. so thats not his fault. I was unaware of the file name requirement for the zip files inside of tic. I wont make that mistake again.
I made the little program for my own use and then thought it may also be of use to others and wanted to contribute in some way to the mystic BBS scene.
I hope this clears up who is at fault for the space in the name.
    lesson learned...

    Hi Owen,

I have exactly the same Problem Files for filebases with Space in it fo not work by tonnsing with tic unter Linux. There will stay in the echofiles/in folder and generate errors in the mutil log.

@Avon do you have any idea to fix this for us Linix/Raspi user? For Linux
the files with Space are diverent handelt as under Windows. We need a
underline "_" as replacement of spaces in the Filename to Process probbery
    File Tossing.

Best regards ans happy new year 2022

No worries. It's not your issue, it's all this retro software we use. Long file names and names with spaces was just never considered.

I wrote the program and uploaded the file for Avon to take a look at,
as such i placed the space in the file name.

Don't give it a second thought. I appreciate you sharing with us and we'll figure a solution soon enough.

Ah HA! Now I know who to blame! ;)

Relax. If I had a nickel for every time I tapped the space bar when I
    shouldn't have, I would've retired a couple decades ago!

It didn't cause any problems that we couldn't, as a group, solve. As you can see, fsxNet is still here!

Thanks for standing up to your mistake. That takes guts. And it's nice to
    know where this mystery began.

The issue is because of the space between MyGUI and the version.
it thinks the file name is "MyGUI" when it is actually "MyGUI v1.0.2.26".

the issue is being looked into and the file has been removed from being hatched out with the space inside the name, tho this may take some time. just remove the file from your "in" folder.

@Avon do you have any idea to fix this for us Linix/Raspi user? For Linux the files with Space are diverent handelt as under Windows. We need a underline "_" as replacement of spaces in the Filename to Process probbery File Tossing.

If you are wanting to appeal to the majority, its best to hatch files meeting the old DOS 8.3 format. That probably has the widest acceptance. If you want to preserve the long filename, put it in a zip/archive file that meets 8.3

Some mailers cannot handle filenames that are longer than DOS's 8.3 and some cannot handle those with spaces, and some both :)

I second that and what @alisha said... I did not receive the updated file on linux/rpi. I only got the one with spaces in the name... No need to do anything now, but just for future efforts... I think it would work for a wider audience to remove the spaces or stick to 8.3 file names... thanks

Hey there, just a wee note to say don't worry about it, no stress, it's all good. :)

It's been a good learning exercise for me also and something I think that may lead to some changes in the way I check file names and also in the way a mailer may handle such things in the future :)

So yeah, we're learning and experimenting and it's all good :)

For me the lesson is to ensure I hatch files with no spaces, I don't personally mind long file names as I think it's 2022 and mailers and software should be able to deal with it. I know some can't but still... yeah... meh.

As for a fix, with respect to Mystic I can see you have posted some info to James in the Fido Mystic echo (thanks for sharing those details :)) I have also just posted what I did, saw etc. in the hope that will help James spot what is amiss.

It seems reading some of the other comments posted in fsx it could be with the way the mailers are sharing file name info being misunderstood between them... that being that case I remain hopeful some fixes can be found.

I think having this happen has been a good thing on a number of levels as it hopefully surfaces some stuff that can be fixed and also gives me pause to check that at the very least, if I am to hatch a file the is longer than the old DOS 8.3 convention, that it's a file name with no spaces.

Owen should not be troubled by any of this... and I want to thank him again for sharing his util that he's been working on with me / us.

    Hi Avon,

Thanks for you words, i was as well in contact with G00R00 on the FidoNet Echolist for Support of MysticBBS. He will fx it with 1.12 A48. There will be
a feature witch fix longnames with or without space with smalle or big characters in the name and as well by missmatch of the tic file and the
    payload file.

We only need to wait and from then all *nix User has a happy life like the Windows User witch has never problem in the past.

    Best regards
